I recently answered a call on Feedblitz for artists to talk about their work at Gordonbrock Primary School. Not perhaps the most exciting invitation I’ve had recently but it came in a week when I hadn’t much on, and I used to teach children a very long time ago, so I contacted Alice and offered to do a slot. We finally agreed on an hour with 8 reception class children on a Friday morning. With this age group a talk was out of the question and so I warped up 8 toilet rolls, got my box of ‘yarns I don’t mind others using’ out of the loft, and with a couple of examples of what you can achieve on the loom, set off for Gordonbrock.

It wasn’t the most exciting workshop that I have run this year but it certainly was the most high energy and exhausting! I’d forgotten what a diverse group 5 & 6 year olds can be personality-wise. (more…)

At Westminster Adult Education Service students/artists have been exploring their own creativity in relation to colour and its application. They enjoy a relaxed atmosphere in which ideas, experiments and experience is shared. Drawing skills are also taught and developed, using a variety of media.
My new work is informed by the colour theory I’m teaching at WAES. Sometimes it’s good to re-fresh skills and gain inspiration.

Would any members be interested in the ‘Dynamics of Colour’, Visual Arts course?
From 13th January 2010, duration; 10 weeks. Sessions are from 10.00am-1.00pm on Wednesday mornings.

Reminder: Monday December 7th –  Angela Schütz

At this busy time of year, as we prepare for the Christmas break – traditionally a time of activity followed by a period of reflection – we welcome your attendance to hear our third speaker Angela Schütz, who will be asking us to examine the creative process itself.

CREATIVITY AND THE CREATIVE BLOCK

Angela Schütz, a practising artist and psychosynthesis counsellor will present a psycho-spiritual view of creativity and the creative block. Using examples from her own artwork she will be sharing her personal experience as well as inviting us to reflect on our own art practice and to gain a deeper insight into the creative process and what makes it flow.

“Creativity is being in the world soulfully, for the only thing we truly make, whether in the arts, in culture or at home, is soul.”
Thomas Moore

Looking forward to January: on Monday 18th Edward Birch of the Southwark Arts Forum will start our SLWA year off by encouraging us to get out of our studios and work places and reap the benefits of networking. Also, gleaned from time spent at the Arts Council, Edward will give his top tips for making succesful funding appliactions.

We look forward to seeing lots of members and friends at these talks.

Best wishes,

Laura and Liz
