ADVANCED NOTICE OF A CALL FOR SLWA ARTISTS FOR THE NOVEMBER 2010 DULWICH LIBRARY EXHIBITION
The 4th exhibition of work by SLWA at Dulwich Library is to run from Sunday 31st October – Saturday 27th November.
Following on from our success at Bankside this exhibition is a good way to keep up the momentum and the profile of our artists in a space that is fast establishing itself as a venue to view and buy small original artworks.
The library is a well used resource centre and the exhibition will be seen by large numbers of people during the month of November.
The previous shows have sold well and there have been several ‘after show sales’ proving that keeping our work in the public eye is important and effective for us as a group and as individuals.
Cost: No submission fee. £7.00 if work accepted. 10% commission on sales.
We are continuing our education work with local schools, organising visits so that pupils can meet the artists, be inspired and enhance their curriculum studies, further raising our profile with parents and in the community. Details of how to take part in the Call for Artists
FULL DETAILS AND AN ENTRY FORM WILL BE AVAILABLE ON THE SLWA WEBSITE FROM 8 SEPTEMBER
Any questions? Contact Paola Minekov or Gabrielle Bradshaw at slwa@btinternet.com

!!Mother and daughters!! SLWA sub-groups within the mother group

Mother and Daughter 'dos' from Good Housekeeping - Thanks ArtbyHeather on flickr
At the end of the AGM as we looked ahead, one group discussed the potential for specialised groups within SLWA. As this was rather impromptu, only painters, photographers and textile artists were represented. Here is Joan Byrne’s report of the discussion.
All of us were in favour of forming sub-groups. The thinking behind this is that artists working in the same medium might jointly mount exhibitions and there would be opportunities for critiques, sharing expertise, etc. Shows would be run under the auspices of SLWA and this would be mutually beneficial.
Specific groups working together is one idea, but we were enthusiastic also about themed exhibitions where artists in all disciplines could come together if the theme excited a response.
Another suggestion was to do site-specific work, e.g., biscuits at the Biscuit Factory. And, we would like to explore pop-up galleries. We thought, too, that if a group is doing a collective show, that invigilating should be shared among the artists.
Watch this space for more information. If you are interested in being part of a genre group contact Joan on slwa@btinternet.com

ARTISTS TALKING: ARTICULATING YOUR PRACTICE is a series of SLWA artist-led Happenings. Last year’s Professional Development Talks bought in expertise from outside, this time SLWA will draw on the experience and knowledge of our 100 strong membership and associated friends.
The events will showcase our work to our members and art lovers, and promote critical conversation and enjoyment of local contemporary practice. Some of the events will be grouped by genre, i.e. sculpture, photography and performance based art.
MAKING CONNECTIONS
Artists Talking aims to create opportunity to network and make new partnerships . There will be cross-pollination with other SLWA activities, though Artists Talking is a separate identity with its own funding. The events are open to all our members and friends and to the local community as advertised in the library and Southwark wide via the Southwark Arts Forum, local galleries, shops, restaurants and other key positions. The events will be published on our website and facebook page.
FORMAT
Importantly the evenings will be fun and dynamic. The evenings will be part structured, followed by informal networking and refreshments.
Artists working performatively or other can combine their talk with a performance. Such artists will be asked to write a 200 word proposal outlining what they would do and what technical support they need.
DATE, TIME AND PLACE
Artists Talking is currently programming the events. 8 are planned. All details are yet to be confirmed. The talks are planned for late October, late November and late January, February, March, April and May.
So that members with regular evening commitments can attend the day of the week will vary, as will the venue. Some events will continue at Dulwich Library though others will be held at less formal venues were we can start later and stay later. We are looking for venues in the Dulwich area. Please let us know of any suggestions.
DOOR SALES
SWLA recognizes the value of the talks and need to fund future events. The entrance fee will remain at £5 on the door for members and £8 for non-members.
Some of the planned sessions:
PHOTOGRAPHERS
The Graceful Travellers, writer/photographers Joan Byrne and Pia Randall-Goddard, will perform readings and talk about their photography. Pia and Joan may be joined by other SLWA members or collaborators.
LATE NOVEMBER – PANEL DISCUSSION
“What place has feminism in Contemporary practice?”
WORKING AS AN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Several members who are working as artists in residence will share their experiences. Member showcase, case studies, how to and best practice.
THE SE LONDON ART MAP
What is going on and where? Vauxhall, Lambeth, Deptford, Peckham and around. A brief look at independent artist run spaces, local gallerists and artists groups.
– POP UP GALLERIES: WORKING COLLABORATIVELY
The final event hopes to motivate and solidify the intent of SLWA members to go off on their own and exhibit independently, under the SLWA banner.
