ONLY 1 week left to submit work for the Spring Show at Dulwich Library.

Deadline for submissions: Friday 28 January

This year the theme of the exhibition is Women and Books. The show coincides with WOW (Women of the World) celebration in Southwark, honouring 100 years of the global celebration of International Women’s Day.

We have suggested that you submit up to 3 pieces of work and have asked that they should be accompanied by texts. The text piece is mainly for the printed catalogue, but also may be shown alongside the work chosen to hang in the library space. This will create a curatorial interest as the pieces will be placed at the ends of the book shelves.

Since the catalogue is A6 or similar, we recommend a short text, 50-100 words. You can easily go shorter, and if you choose to go longer we could use extracts.

The text should be a simple concept / idea / explanation or a quote from a book.  This is extremely open ended.  You should be able to use any already existing work, even if the existing title is intrinsic to the piece.  Most words/text can be found in some book somewhere!  Also –  your work could be inspired by –

a genre, eg ‘poetry’

a book or book title, eg  ‘Room’, or ‘The Long Song’

a writer, eg Mary Wollstonecraft

or simply a sentence, eg:  ‘the year of magical thinking’ …

PLEASE SEND YOUR 3 IMAGES (300 dpi) and text

BY 28 January to

slwaexhibition@gmail.com

Cost: No submission fee.

£10.00 if work accepted. The slightly increased fee is to cover the extra cost of producing a catalogue to celebrate this exhibition, and to develop publicity. A commission of 10%to SLWA will be levied on sales. Works will be for sale unless specified otherwise by the artist

The works (only 2D) must not exceed 55cm in width or 80cm in height, including frame.

Any questions? Contact Tamar or Ilinca: slwaexhibition@gmail.com

Joan Byrne and Pia Randall Goddard are photographers and writers. As part of the innovative SLWA programme of talks, we gave a presentation at the Jane Newbery Gallery, 33 Dulwich Village on Sunday, 14 November. Our focus was the dynamic between words and images and an exploration of this finding: Eighty per cent of received information is via images, leaving 20 per cent for language.

Following an overview of artists with relevant work, we screened our own photography and performed readings of our written work. This was interspersed by five other artists/writers reading their own material. The variety of voices and views made for an entertaining afternoon, and provided a supportive context in which
to look anew at the power of images and the power of words. (more…)

As an artist who uses mixed media I am interested in the forthcoming Insight series on ‘Watercolour, Oils, Acrylic’ at Dulwich Picture Gallery, three talks in which experts from Tate and the National Gallery will use images of well known pictures to show how famous artists have used these different paints and why they chose them. This article is based on my working practice in relation to using these media.

Come “Wild Art Foraging” on the west coast of Scotland! A brand new themed short break has been created by the owners of one of Scotland’s up-and-coming hotels, the lovely Loch Melfort Hotel in Arduaine by Oban. Loch Melfort hotel, the current Scottish Small Country House Hotel of the Year, sits on a lovely length of coastline on Asknish Bay south of Oban, and overlooks the isles of Jura, Shuna and Scarba – a scene from the hotel’s bedrooms, lounges and restaurant which means Loch Melfort can justifiably lay claim to having “the finest views on the west coast”. Entitled “Art Foraging”, the three night weekend break, running from 12th to 15th November, will tap into guests’ creativity and encourage them to use the fantastic beach and garden natural resources available on the doorstep at Loch Melfort in a creative and exciting way. The weekend, which hotel owners Calum and Rachel Ross insist will suit people aged from 17 to 77, is led by art foraging specialist Susan Wood, and no previous art experience is necessary. (more…)

We’re looking at holding a Christmas Fayre on Saturday 11th December 2010.

We have a number of stalls booked to attend – we are looking for anyone that has something to offer for a stall. Arts and crafts, gift ideas, local businesses with an idea for out of the box stalls.

We’ll reasonably consider people that can offer us.

Thank you,

Gavin and Simon
