The first critique was hosted by Liz Charsley Jory at her latest exhibition on December 3rd 2008
My work was hanging for a week at ArtDog Gallery Space, so we met there to talk about it, and the work of the person I was showing with, as well as a painting by Liz Dalton and a photographic series by Kim Thornton.
I had sent out basic Critique guidelines to the group before the meeting, and discussed how I felt I would benefit most from the crit, based on the most positive experiences I had at Camberwell college during my MA. Everyone felt able to contribute and I received some useful new ideas to consider, and the name of a new artist to look at in conjunction with the making of my drawings. Most importantly, I learned about the first impression my work makes upon people who have never seen it before.
Kim Thornton also found it very useful to hear feedback from a new source and to discuss issues she had been mulling over in her head. She found that having to answer questions about why you have done something in a certain way really helps to clarify it.
Liz Dalton came away with lots of new ideas about how to extend and develop her work and felt very encouraged. She found it was particularly good to hear that other people are in a similar position with their work, noting that sometimes the trouble with your own work is that you can become detached from it, forgetting to even look at it properly, and having to respond to critical comment really makes you sit up and think!
We all felt that the comments were perceptive and accurate, and much discussion was generated from looking at the work.
It is hoped that more people will answer the Call for Critiques 2009, as all present felt it had been a very positive experience.
